5.6.3 Doctor of Medicine - Pre-clerkship (Year 1 & 2) Regulations: Specific Expectations and Requirements


a) A student who has an overall unsatisfactory rating on the first attempt of any two courses in the same curricular (not calendar) year of the undergraduate medical curriculum will be required to repeat the year or to withdraw from the MD program. Exceptions may be made by the Associate Dean, UME in extraordinary circumstances.

b) A student who is unsuccessful in a rewrite summative evaluation will be required to repeat the year or to withdraw from the MD program. The previous results for any course will stay on the student’s official record. There are no exceptions to this regulation to ensure that all students are competent to provide safe clinical care.

c) In Pre-clerkship (Year 1 or 2), a student shall be invited to appear before SARC if the Associate Dean UME finds the student's performance and/or academic progression warrants review. The reason for this review may include, but is not limited to, multiple examination deferrals, incomplete courses, or unprofessional behaviour. If the student declines to appear before SARC, SARC will render a decision in their absence based on the documentation (academic or professional) submitted to SARC.
